From Saturday’s Guardian:
August Strindberg, Swedish playwright: “Write the misery out of your life and it will seem like it never existed.”
He was living in Austria when he heard of the success of his ‘Creditors’ in Paris:
“It is happiness to sit in a cottage by the Danube and to know that 500 people are siting dead quiet in an auditorium…
“Many will go away with my spores in their grey matter; they will go home pregnant with the seed of my soul, and they will breed my brood.”
Can’t expect my writing to ever achieve that, but if I could ever write from the heart… it wouldn’t be here.
